Board favors 4-way stop at River and Hill, asks staff to study additional downtown pedestrian measures

The East Dundee Village Board discussed traffic-calming and pedestrian-safety actions for downtown at its Oct. 21 meeting and gave staff direction to pursue installations and studies.
Trustees said drivers often hesitate or accelerate through the River and Hill approach near the new deck and agreed a permanent 4-way stop would slow traffic and improve pedestrian safety. Staff recommended bringing the item back on the consent/regular agenda for formal action. The board also asked staff to monitor Railroad and River, coordinate with the police chief, and consult IDOT regarding flashing signals or audible pedestrian cues for higher-traffic crossings.
Trustees suggested trimming bushes near the Barrington bike-trail crossing to improve sight lines and consider inexpensive Ballard/center-island treatments where feasible. Staff said the village will include corridor studies (including Van Buren/Route 72) in the 2025 budget and will check statutory requirements on sign authority.
Next steps: staff will place River and Hill on the agenda for formal action, coordinate with the police chief and IDOT as needed, and include pedestrian crossing studies in the 2025 planning cycle.
