United ISD authorizes emergency repairs at Centeno Elementary to restore classroom operations

The United Independent School District Board of Trustees approved a resolution delegating authority to Superintendent Dr. Cruz to authorize emergency repairs at Centeno Elementary following an incident that damaged a classroom.

A district presenter told trustees the resolution, using Texas Education Code sections 44.031 and 44.0312, would allow the district to bypass regular procurement timelines for emergency repairs. The presenter said architects and engineers would assess the structure and purchasing and facilities departments would select a capable contractor; the presenter added, "we don't think it's gonna be too expensive, but you don't know until your architects and engineers go in there and check the structure."

Trustees discussed social-media reports suggesting a teacher lacked supplies; district staff said instructional and structural materials were replaced promptly and that teaching and learning were not impacted. Trustees also said they would follow up with risk management and the district's attorneys about insurance subrogation possibilities if a third party was responsible for the crash.

A trustee moved to approve the emergency-delegation resolution and the Chair seconded; the Chair called for a voice vote and recorded 'aye' with no opposition heard. The board directed staff to inform trustees of purchases made under the emergency authority.
