Superintendent Locke opened the committee meeting’s administrative reports on Oct. 9 by focusing on instruction and several district highlights.
Locke said he has spent time in classrooms observing instructional practice and emphasized that ‘‘what happens in classrooms matter,’’ noting examples of active learning and student engagement across both Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South. He recognized staff and students for recent awards: an Alisa McLeod of Hinsdale Central was named the Aaron and Baker Latin Teacher of the Year by the Illinois Classical Conference, and both high schools were named to the 2024 Advanced Placement honor roll (Central gold, South silver).
Locke also briefed the board on safety-related communications. The district tested its emergency broadcast system, sending more than 11,000 messages to measure receipt rates, and reported a plan to contact families who did not receive notices. He noted the Hinsdale Central pool reopening and that the district has migrated video archives to YouTube to save cost and improve access.
The superintendent said he is early in his tenure and is trying to ‘‘listen and learn’’ as the district charts a longer-term instructional vision; he said future work will focus on instructional rigor, relevance and strengthening the link between tasks and student learning. No formal action was requested during his report.
