Kearney Board welcomes new hires, approves consent agenda and moves to executive session

The Kearney Board of Aldermen used its July 1 meeting to introduce new hires, handle routine business and close the public session for confidential matters.
Chief Thomas introduced three new police officers — Cody Tillsworth, Jordan Wheeler and Vienna — and praised their training progress. Public-works staff (Shelly) introduced a part‑time cemetery sexton, Marcos. The board welcomed the new employees.
With no discussion on the consent agenda, a motion to approve was made and seconded and the consent agenda passed unanimously.
Finance Director Stephanie Harris presented the May 2024 monthly financial report. Harris told the board that, two months into the fiscal year, accounts were generally in line with budget expectations; board members asked brief clarifying questions about interest income.
In mayor’s communications the mayor reminded the public about a July 3 Jesse James Park event (weather permitting) and said the board would cancel its September 16 meeting to allow staff and board members to attend a priority session on Sept. 28.
At the end of the public session, the board voted unanimously to enter executive session at 7:12 p.m. under RSMo 610.021(1) (legal actions and privileged communications with counsel) and subsection (12) (negotiated contracts). The public meeting was adjourned before the closed session.
