Kearney adopts budget amendment to replace museum HVAC after unit failed

The Kearney Board of Aldermen adopted an ordinance on July 1 amending the fiscal-year 2025 budget to appropriate funds for replacement of the museum’s HVAC unit after the existing system failed on June 21.
City Administrator Sheila Lepore told the board the unit is about 22 years old and that museum artifacts must be maintained between about 68 and 72 degrees. "The new the 1 of the air conditioner units at the museum went out, on June 21," Lepore said, noting the condition creates a semi-urgent need for replacement. Lepore said staff obtained three bids and that the budget amendment of $7,500 was prepared conservatively; actual cost is expected to be less than that given the bids received. She also noted the Kearney Community Foundation is holding $3,380.69 for the museum that could be used to offset the city’s share.
The ordinance was read by title on first reading, moved and seconded, and approved on first reading. On second reading the board approved the ordinance by roll call; Aldermen King, Holt, Lehman and Barker all recorded "aye," and the mayor announced the vote was unanimous and the ordinance passed on second reading.
Staff said the appropriation will be used to repair or replace the HVAC unit to protect artifacts and meet recommended temperature ranges; staff will manage the final cost within the adopted amendment.
