President Terrence Wall updated the committee on a multi-phase traffic improvement plan for the Crawford's Corner area, saying the township committee and state legislative support helped secure a Department of Transportation discretionary aid grant of $3,500,000 that will fund left-turn lanes, lane widening and related traffic enhancements.
Wall traced the work back to a modest district investment earlier this year: "You fashioned an $18,000 program that most of the board supported to invest in bringing concepts... that generated a conversation that is now a $3,500,000 grant," he said. Wall said the award is structured in at least two blocks, with an initial approximately $2,000,000 phase that will allow the township engineers and school district to advance design and property-acquisition planning.
Board members stressed the collaborative nature of the effort, thanking Mayor Impr(e)veduto and township staff for applying for the grant. Administrators and trustees said the project requires coordination with township engineers and that some property acquisitions may be needed before construction can begin. No construction timetable was set; Wall said the intent is to start phase 1 after school-year completion in June.
The board displayed concept maps for public review and said more detailed plans will be shared as engineers refine the designs and any required acquisition steps are clarified.
