SFPD updates commission: officer shot in parking lot incident; school shooting victims in stable condition

Acting Chief Tony Chaplin briefed the Police Commission on two serious incidents in mid‑October and the department—s ongoing responses.

Chaplin said an officer-involved shooting occurred Oct. 14 in the "Terre Veil district" after officers responded to a report of a mentally disturbed person at 1515 Slow Boulevard. The officer was struck in the head and transported to San Francisco General Hospital in critical condition, Chaplin said; the tactical team located and took the suspect into custody and transported him to San Francisco General Hospital for treatment. The chief identified the subject during the presentation as Nicholas McWhirter (DOB 3/21/90) and said a summary of the investigation would be provided at a town hall on Thursday, Oct. 20, at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center, 2850 Nineteenth Avenue at 6:00 PM.

On Oct. 17, Chaplin reported a shooting in the parking lot at June Jordan High School (325 LeGrand Avenue) at about 3:15 PM that prompted an immediate lockdown and an active-shooter response. Officers located three gunshot victims at the scene and a fourth person presented himself to Bayview Station; all shooting victims were transported to local hospitals and were reported as being in stable condition. Chaplin said the Gang Task Force is investigating the school shooting.

When asked whether suspects were identified, Chaplin said the cases remain under active investigation. "It's an ongoing investigation," he said.

What happens next: Chaplin said summaries and updates would be provided at the upcoming town hall meeting on Oct. 20, and the department's investigative units will continue to work with the district attorney and other investigators on both incidents.
