Summary
After a committee review and a 60-day public display with limited written comment, the board voted 5-0 to adopt a recommended health resource for the 2024–25 school year; the adopted material includes differentiated supports and online instructor resources.
The Tempe Union High School District governing board voted unanimously to adopt a new health curriculum resource for the 2024–25 school year following a multi-stage review and a 60-day public display.
Mr. Threadgill told trustees the Health Resource Adoption Committee—made up of health teachers from across the district—reviewed vendor submissions beginning in fall 2023, identified two finalists, scheduled vendor demonstrations and recommended one resource. The adopted resource was placed on display in the district office for 60 days; three members of the public signed that review and two left written comments, one urging attention to nutrition coverage.
Threadgill described differentiation and assessment features built into the resource: multiple reading-guide versions, two differentiated summative assessments, formative assessments that inform instruction, instructor-facing online supports, and accommodations for English-language learners, special education students and academically gifted students. "Our hope tonight is to receive your approval of the recommended health resource so that we can begin training the health teachers at our sites," Threadgill said.
Member Steele moved to approve item H1; Member Hodge seconded. The motion passed 5-0.
Board members thanked the committee for its work and noted the public-review process and teacher involvement in selection. Implementation steps referenced training over the summer and continued work during the next school year.
