Port reports Pier 43.5 progress; Heron's Head Park public groundbreaking set for Nov. 1

The commission heard an Executive Director's report updating the public on the Pier 43.5 reconstruction and related waterfront work.
Port staff said Vortex Marine has driven roughly 92 2‑foot diameter concrete piles (approximately 100 feet each) to support a new wharf deck and replaced over 500 feet of timber seawall with reinforced concrete and rock armor. Three precast deck segments were set by barge on Oct. 13 and eleven more precast panels were in transit; crews poured approximately 9,000 square feet of 15‑inch concrete deck in one overnight pour that represented about 40% of the deck material. The project was described as about 90% complete and on track for substantial completion by Thanksgiving.
The Executive Director also confirmed a public groundbreaking for the Heron’s Head Park expansion — an acre‑and‑a‑quarter site — scheduled for Nov. 1 at 10:30 a.m. and said invitations will be issued. Commissioners and the public praised port staff and contractors for progress on the waterfront work.
