Parents urge longer kindergarten day and oversight of on‑site care; student speaker seeks board recognition for speech and debate

During the public comment period, parent Sharon Berezovsky told the Irvine Unified School District Board that the district’s kindergarten day (which she said ends at 11:20 a.m.) creates a substantial child-care gap for working families. Berezovsky said that on-site supplemental care at Springbrook Elementary (Catalyst Kids) is the only nearby option and described declines in program quality, including an allegation that her son was physically handled by staff; she asked the district to consider extending kindergarten hours, partnering with other providers to expand supervised options, or supervising private providers to ensure standards.

Separately, Suraj Shah, a junior at Beckman High School representing Debate Discovery Kids, asked the board to adopt a resolution recognizing the importance of speech and debate programs. Shah described his nonprofit’s work expanding access to debate education, cited grants and reported outreach to legislators, and said he would submit a drafted resolution and follow up with district leadership.

Board members thanked both speakers and clarified that Brown Act limits prevent direct responses during the meeting, but trustees indicated willingness to follow up through staff or post-meeting contacts. The superintendent and trustees noted partnerships on childcare and civic education take place with city and community partners and encouraged Shah to share his materials with district staff for follow-up.
