Adam Maday, appearing for Legal Aid, said the agency’s budget remains largely on par with last year but requested that a position left vacant since February 2009 be filled as a full-time legal secretary. Maday said the vacancy had been handled as a part-time role over many years, producing high turnover — "16 people have filled that spot" — and that salary savings from a recently retired attorney could cover the cost of converting to a permanent full-time position.
Councilmembers asked about workflow and demand. Maday said there is "never a shortage for demand" for Legal Aid services and that adding a full-time secretary would improve scheduling, intake and reduce administrative strain on attorneys. He also described a Bar Association-sponsored "talk to a lawyer" program on Thursdays that supplements access to advice.
No formal action or vote was taken; the staffing request was presented for consideration in the budget process.
