Port approves memorandum to station SFPD Marine Unit at Hyde Street Harbor

The Port Commission unanimously approved Resolution 12‑51, authorizing a memorandum of understanding (MOU M15137) enabling the San Francisco Police Department Marine Unit to occupy approximately half of a new joint operations/security (JOS) building at Hyde Street Harbor for a 16‑month term.
Jay Edwards, senior property manager in the Port’s real estate division, outlined the background: the Marine Unit had been located at Hyde Street Harbor since about 2003 and the old “Blue Shed” structure was in severe disrepair. A Homeland Security grant of approximately $1,800,000 helped finance construction of the new JOS building, which Edwards said was completed on time and within budget. Edwards said the Marine Unit will occupy roughly half the facility and that the arrangement improves public safety, response time to waterfront incidents, and coordination among Port, maritime and public‑safety agencies.
Edwards asked the Commission to approve the MOU and the attached resolution; the Commission moved, seconded and approved the action by voice vote. Commissioners and staff noted the public benefits including a new harbor office with public amenities and the improved coordination of Port, homeland security and maintenance activities.
The resolution was approved by voice vote and is recorded as Resolution 12‑51 in the Port’s minutes.
