Kearney selects Redgate Disposal for trash and recycling; residents face modest increase

Kearney aldermen unanimously approved Resolution 54-2024 on Oct. 7 to award a three-year municipal residential solid-waste and curbside-recycling contract to Redgate Disposal LLC, the lowest responsive bidder.
City Administrator Sheila Herndon told the board four contractors bid for the work and that Redgate submitted the lowest and best bid and was the only bidder to offer a recyclables credit and weekly, appointment-based bulky-item pickup. Redgate representatives from the Peterson family attended to answer questions.
Under the contract, Redgate will distribute resident carts beginning Dec. 9 and begin curbside service the week of Jan. 6. Administrator Herndon said residents will see an increase of $2.67 per month for one trash and recycling cart; a second cart would cost an additional $4.36 per month. The regular monthly charge was presented as $19.42 for trash and recycling with a separate $6.00 monthly fee item noted in the packet.
The contract allows Redgate to request an annual rate adjustment supported by documentation and subject to board approval; it also contains penalties for missed pickups. The board asked staff to coordinate messaging to residents about recycling rules and cart use, and staff agreed to provide guidance and outreach prior to the service start.
Aldermen approved the resolution by voice vote and thanked Redgate for offering features such as safety latches on cart lids and appointment-based bulky-item pickup options intended to reduce litter and missed pickup issues.
