Board approves East Washington closure for Kearney Optimist Club’s Labor Day races

The Kearney Board of Aldermen voted unanimously Aug. 8 to allow the Kearney Optimist Club to close East Washington Street between South Grove Street and Jefferson Street on Sept. 2, 2024, to hold its annual Labor Day races.
Connie Crawford, a 25-year member of the Optimist Club, told the board the event is a long-standing community tradition and includes foot races, bike races, skateboards, roller skates, three-legged races and an egg toss. "It's just an old fashioned fun morning for Labor Day," she said, and asked for the street closure from about 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Crawford said the club had submitted the required insurance and other information to the city in advance.
Alderman Hall moved to approve the closure; the motion was seconded and the board approved it by voice vote. After the vote, Crawford asked about barricade arrangements; mayoral staff asked her to coordinate delivery with the parks director so barricades and other on-site logistics can be arranged.
The closure approval is administrative and limited to the date and times specified; the Optimist Club and city staff are responsible for organizing barricades, security and public-safety considerations tied to the event.
