Port authorizes RFP for restaurant at 601 Cesar Chavez Street near Pier 80

Geoffrey Bauer, the Port’s leasing manager, asked the Commission to approve issuance of a request for proposals (RFP) to redevelop a freestanding 7,300-square-foot restaurant site at 601 Cesar Chavez Street adjacent to Pier 80. Bauer said the goals of the RFP are to provide high-quality casual dining for the southern waterfront and local community, encourage local business participation in the procurement process, renovate the building and maximize revenue for the Port.
Commissioners moved and seconded the recommendation and discussed whether to allow nightclub or entertainment uses at the site. Bauer said the prior operator had issues and that police had asked staff specifically not to allow that type of use at that location; he said lease language can be drafted to control uses and to require adequate operator controls to prevent problems.
A motion to approve issuance of the RFP was carried by voice vote and staff said it will return to the Commission with respondents and a recommended selection before negotiating a lease.
Bauer closed by noting the selection schedule is in the Commission package and that staff recommends issuing the RFP to stimulate local participation and to solicit viable proposals for renovation and operation of the site.
