County council approves list of budget cuts and schedules final salary ordinance vote for Oct. 2

At the Sept. 4 Vanderburgh County Council meeting, Finance Chair James Raven presented proposed budget adjustments intended to provide approximately $2.2 million in general‑fund relief for the 2025 budget. Raven said roughly $1 million of requests were shifted into other funds.
Raven enumerated specific line items to be set or moved, including sheriff overtime and extra‑help line adjustments, jail medical and food funding (with some jail food moved into the LIT fund), central dispatch funding, building maintenance, and riverboat and LIT fund items. He proposed setting some overtime and equipment lease lines to zero and moving obligations into targeted funds where appropriate.
Council members asked clarifying questions about contracted line items (for example, the county health clinic contract level) and whether some items had been correctly transcribed in the packet. After discussion, the council voted by roll call to approve the list of changes as presented. Raven then moved and the council approved a motion to set all salary lines, including FICA, PERF and insurance, to be finalized at the Oct. 2 final budget hearing.
The council recessed the budget hearing and scheduled follow‑up meetings: a P and F meeting on Sept. 25 at 3:30 p.m. and the council’s Oct. 2 meeting at 3:30 p.m., with final budget adoption to follow the council meeting (not earlier than 4 p.m.).
