Evansville Board of Public Safety approves multiple bids, event closures and equipment purchases

The City of Evansville Board of Public Safety met Sept. 25 and approved a slate of routine administrative requests including bid solicitations for police and fire equipment, demolition contract awards, multiple event road closures and several handicap parking spaces.
Captain McQuay of the Evansville Police Department asked the board for permission to advertise sealed bids “for 40 in‑car computers” needed for patrol vehicles and for sealed bids on five unmarked detective vehicles. He also presented an interlocal access agreement with the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Department to split radio costs between the two agencies; all three items were approved by motion.
The board accepted a donation offered to the Evansville Fire Department, after Deputy Chief Garrett requested the body “accept a donation of a Polaris UTV.” Fire leadership also received approval to advertise bids for a Station 16 renovation with a public bid opening scheduled for Oct. 23, and the board approved listed revisions and new standard operating guidelines (SOGs).
Kim of the Building Commission presented low bids for several demolition projects at residential addresses and asked the board to rebid one property (832 Lincoln Ave.) because of an asbestos‑contaminated roof; the awards and the rebid were approved. The board recorded several vendor low bids as read at the meeting.
The board approved a large group of special‑event and road‑closure requests: the Lincolnshire Front Porch Festival (Oct. 6), the Harrison marching band invitational (Sept. 28), three concerts on Main Street for Tiki on Main (Sept. 27), the Midwest Writers Guild Author Fest (Sept. 28), Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church trunk‑or‑treat (Oct. 19), a Cantonese car show (Oct. 27) and the University of Evansville homecoming street closure (Nov. 9). The Tri State Multiple Sclerosis Association’s Evansville Autumn Walk, scheduled for Nov. 3 on Harrison High School grounds, was also approved (that walk does not require road closures).
Construction‑related closures were approved, including a temporary closure for crane work at the Innovation Point building requested by Murphy Elevator and a downtown holiday decoration installation/closure. The Cook Family Children’s Museum received approval to close the rear alley for demolition and exhibit renovation after staff said dumpsters would occupy the space; museum staff were asked to notify neighboring property owners and return to the board if the closure causes unanticipated impacts.
Other business approved included a lane restriction request by Kimpel Inc. to allow HVAC replacement work on North Main Street, several dumpster permits, and three on‑street handicap parking locations recommended by the Transportation & Engineering Department after inspection. Speaker 1 publicly thanked Curtis of TED for his assistance with handicap parking evaluations.
Motions to approve claims and the Board of Public Safety minutes from Aug. 28 passed, and the meeting adjourned. The next meeting is scheduled for Oct. 9.
