Coweta County board honors Northside Elementary staff for lifesaving Code Blue response

Coweta County officials recognized Northside Elementary staff for administering CPR and using an AED during a Sept. 19 code-blue emergency; the student regained a pulse, was transported to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and has returned to school.
The Coweta County Board of Education on Oct. 8 recognized Northside Elementary staff for a Sept. 19 medical emergency in which school personnel used CPR and an automated external defibrillator (AED) to revive a student.
School health coordinator Shannon Hendricks Caplinger told the board the incident began at 7:44 a.m. during arrival. According to the account presented to the board, nurse Ashley Washington administered rescue breaths for three minutes while teacher Emily Brockway assisted; CPR and AED use continued and, “after 5 minutes of CPR by the nurse and the teacher, [the student] regained their pulse and at 07:58 began to breathe on their own,” Caplinger said. The student was taken by EMS to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and has since “fully recovered and returned to school,” she told the board.
Principal Amy Addison described the response as a demonstration of training and teamwork, naming nurse Washington, teacher Brockway and other staff members as members of the school’s Code Blue team. Caplinger told the board Coweta County Schools have had AEDs in every school since February 2003 and that staff provide regular CPR and emergency-response training. She said code-blue drills are performed four times a year and that school nurses and designated teams rehearse hands-on responses.
The board presented the Northside Code Blue team with a token of appreciation. No formal action or vote related to this recognition was required; the item was presented during the recognitions portion of the agenda.
