Willmar City Council approved a professional services agreement to design a new LED lighting system and navigational aids for Runway 1331 at the municipal airport.
Airport representative Eric told the council that FAA guidance has moved the federal funding share for this type of project from 90% to 95%, improving the project’s affordability. He said the city’s engineering portion this evening is roughly $4,200; full project estimates when design is complete are in the $1.4–$1.5 million range, with the state agreeing to match half of the local share in addition to the FAA funds. Council approved the engineering contract unanimously.
Staff said final construction costs will be confirmed after engineering and bidding, and noted that current conditions make it a favorable time to advance the project with strong federal participation.
