The Neosho City Council on Nov. 5 accepted the traffic commission’s recommendation to change the posted speed limit on Baxter Street and directed staff to prepare an ordinance.
The traffic commission recommended increasing the speed limit to 35 miles per hour between Summit and Business 49; the police/chief recommended a slightly different boundary (Hickory to Business 49). Council voted to recommend 35 mph from Hickory west to Business 49 in both directions and asked public-works staff to review street lighting because several council members said the route has long, dark stretches. The chief noted that the recommendation requires an ordinance change and will not take effect immediately.
Council members said increased speeds combined with low lighting heighten safety concerns and asked staff to evaluate adding lights at intersections or subdivisions along the corridor. Staff said it will follow up with a public-works recommendation.
Next steps: staff will draft the ordinance and report back with recommended lighting improvements and timing for signage changes.
