Evansville tree board endorses fall campaign to plant more than 200 trees, schedules Nov. 9 volunteer event

The City of Evansville Tree Advisory Board on Sept. 5 endorsed a broad fall tree-planting plan that board members said could include "hundreds" of trees and scheduled a volunteer training-and-planting celebration for Nov. 9.
Sean (department staff) presented a list of proposed planting sites including the State Hospital, Feustown TP Parks, Hillcrest, Gable and Deaconess Sports Complex and planned Westman Woods plantings. He said that some sites will be planted through contracted work while other sites will rely on volunteer crews. "It's gonna be hundreds," he said when asked whether the total would exceed 200 trees.
Board members proposed involving local schools and neighborhood groups for the celebration and asked that species selection, placement and watering plans be organized in advance so volunteers know roles. The board asked staff to prioritize sites with likely steward groups and to plan volunteer supervision; members discussed using the Promise Zone schools to involve students.
The board also authorized staff (Sean) to approve tree plantings for the US 41 south-of-Washington corridor under parameters discussed (e.g., approximately 37 trees in the replacement area with remaining trees planted elsewhere), so the project can proceed without the board having to reapprove each small adjustment.
The meeting also approved removal of identified hazardous trees in parks (Helfrich Park, Helfrich Golf Course, Mesker Park, Lorraine Park and two at Dogtown Boat Ramp) and heard an Emerald Ash Borer update. Sean said the Twilight Tour fundraiser to support ash-tree treatments will be Oct. 19 at 5 p.m.; staff will coordinate tree-treatment funding and follow-up at future meetings.
What happens next: Staff will circulate more detailed planting site maps and species lists to board members, set up the Nov. 9 volunteer training and report progress on planting and stewardship at future meetings.
