The Evansville Police Merit Commission met on Sept. 23 and approved the Sept. 9 meeting minutes, authorized $1,575 in claims and took several personnel and hiring actions, including accepting a three-day suspension for Sergeant Trudy Day and certifying a 2024 lieutenant promotional list.
Commissioner James Sutton called the meeting to order at 4:30 p.m. and named attending officials including Deputy Chief Kirby and Chief Phil Smith. Commissioners D.J. Thompson and Denise Johnson Kinkade and Sergeant Dexter Wolf were present; Joy Teeter served as recording secretary.
In routine business, the commission approved the Sept. 9 minutes and, on a motion by Commissioner D.J. Thompson, approved claims totaling $1,575. Both motions were seconded and carried by voice vote.
The commission received an update on field training officers and addressed a disciplinary matter involving Sergeant Trudy Day. Commissioner D.J. Thompson moved to accept a three-day suspension for Sergeant Trudy Day; the motion was seconded and carried by voice vote. Commissioners discussed whether an appeal had been filed but did not record a named appeal in the transcript.
The commission then moved to personnel certifications. Commissioners voted to certify the 2024 lieutenant promotional list as effective from Sept. 11, 2024, through Sept. 10, 2026. The body also voted to certify the applicant eligibility list arising from the September 2024 hiring process (the transcript alternately uses the phrasing 'September 24' in one line), and approved a separate motion to remove applicant 24-130 from the application process.
