Board signs on to multiple community events: United Way Day of Action, Wheels & Chrome and recurring blood drives

Leanna Smith, executive director of United Way Grant County, briefed the board on Day of Action — a countywide volunteer day planned for Sept. 19 with a community celebration at Gas City Park beginning at 6 p.m. Smith said last year’s event mobilized more than 170 volunteers who completed 24 projects; she asked the county to sign a proclamation supporting the event. Commissioners agreed to arrange signatures and offered procedural help.
Organizers for Wheels and Chrome (a car-and-motorcycle show) asked for county support for a proposed downtown event on Aug. 16, 2025; the board noted that road-closure authority rests with the city council and advised coordination with city staff on closures, power and staging. Organizers said sponsors and insurance are in place and that vendors will not be charged.
Representatives from local blood supplier Versity asked to host county blood drives; they provided a list of 2024–2025 dates (including a Nov. 13 drive) and described the donation process and local need. Commissioners approved the hosting request by consent since no county funds were requested.
Next steps: organizers will coordinate road closures, vendor power needs and contracts with city and county staff; the county will process a proclamation for the Day of Action.
