Evans Middle School students demonstrate STEM ‘custom shoe’ design to board

Evans Middle School brought a classroom demonstration to the board Sept. 10 showcasing a STEM design challenge in which students interviewed board members as clients and designed personalized shoes to meet client needs and constraints.
Principal Jessica Slayton told the board that the school’s improvement plan for 2024–25 emphasizes increasing student engagement and classroom rigor and implementing the district’s 4 C’s: critical thinking, collaboration, communication and creativity. STEM teacher Miss Skinner said the activity aligned to MS‑ETS.1.1 and MS‑ETS.1.4 and helped students “grasp important STEM principles and connect their learning to real life scenarios.”
Multiple students described their design choices and future goals. One student said, “My future goals include becoming an aerospace engineer so I can use my creativity in STEM and my love for math to improve the future in air transportation.” Another student explained designing a shoe with a Bible verse requested by a client. Presenters distributed handouts explaining the design process and invited parents to take photos after the presentation.
