On Aug. 27, 2024, the Milledgeville City Council took up the second reading of ordinance O24‑08‑13, which would amend license fees and conditions for certain businesses, including alcohol permit fees.
Councilmember Reynolds proposed a series of amendments including striking a $200 nonrefundable annual application fee and removing a $600 annual surcharge for establishments that sell alcohol on Sundays. There was immediate pushback from other councilmembers about the timing of the proposed amendments: one member said last‑minute changes needed to be circulated in advance to allow proper review.
After discussion, Reynolds withdrew his first two proposed strikes and then offered to table the ordinance for further consideration. The motion to table (mover: Reynolds; second: Miss Walden per roll call sequence) was placed and the clerk called the roll; the motion carried. Council and staff noted that tabling delays the time available for affected businesses to renew licenses unless the council schedules a special called meeting.
The ordinance remains on the council’s docket for further work; councilmembers agreed to circulate proposed language in advance of the next discussion so businesses and fellow councilmembers can review changes.
