Committee reviews Strava heat map to prioritize smaller bike and pedestrian fixes ahead of West Main rebuild
Summary
Using Strava heat‑map data, the committee identified high‑use corridors such as Parkview and Packerland and asked staff to study near‑term fixes (button extenders, sidewalk connections) to improve East‑West access before large reconstruction in 2027–28.

The Bicycle & Pedestrian Committee used Strava heat‑map data on Oct. 14 to examine where bicyclists are actually riding in town and to identify near‑term, low‑cost improvements that could improve connectivity before the West Main reconstruction scheduled for 2027–2028.
Chair and staff displayed Strava heat maps showing heavy recreational and commuter use on Parkview, Packerland and segments of Wabi and Hansen. Members noted that some high‑use corridors lack continuous sidewalks and that simple fixes — for example, extending pedestrian push buttons at signalized crossings and providing short sidewalk connectors — could make streets more usable for people who bike and walk.
The committee directed staff to add a focused corridor study to a future agenda (East‑West access north of West Main) and to return with recommendations on small interventions that could be implemented sooner than large capital projects.
