The Utah County Commission approved modified recommendations from the county attorney’s office to refund portions of property taxes for two appeals, granting refunds for tax year 2023 but denying refunds for 2022.
Adam Beck of the county attorney’s office explained the recommendation to refund 2023 taxes for two appeals to be consistent with prior decisions. “The refund on the Jeffrey Bell would be $6,393.80,” Beck said, and for the estate of Paul and Paula Dearden the recommended 2023 refund is $1,782.91.
A Dearden family member addressed the commission and requested leniency, saying missed checkboxes on forms were due to family illness and deaths. “The reason that the forms weren't filled out correctly was my dad was dying in 2022, and then my mom died in 2023,” the family member said. The speaker added that an aunt has lived in the house for more than 15 years and that the refund would matter to relatives caring for disabled family members.
Commissioner Gardner said he appreciated staff’s consistency in recommendations and moved to approve the modified recommendations; the motion was seconded and passed unanimously by the two commissioners present.
The refunds will be processed per the county’s normal financial procedures and recorded in the property-tax actions file.
