Commission approves Harry Bridges sculpture at Ferry Building plaza

Dan Hodap of the Port's Planning and Development Division presented a plan to install a bronze 12-foot likeness of labor leader Harry Bridges on the plaza west of the Ferry Building. Staff said the sculpture would stand on a 4-foot granite base with embedded text and be installed under an MOU with the San Francisco Arts Commission; the Committee for Harry Bridges Plaza would fund and maintain the monument for a 20-year period at no cost to the port.
Speakers representing the committee, including Richard Mead of ILW Local 10, voiced support for fundraising and installation. Commissioners asked staff about exact placement to avoid pedestrian flow conflicts; staff said field analysis was done and staff would verify placement during higher pedestrian volumes if the commission approved the item. The commission approved the action (Resolution 11-67).
