Carmel Central honors student researchers, PTO/PTA volunteers and retirees

The Carmel Central School District opened the June 18 meeting by celebrating students and volunteers.
Teachers and program staff highlighted student achievements at the Junior Science & Humanities Symposium and the Westchester Science and Engineering Fair: projects ranged from aromatherapy in teens to water-quality testing and Alzheimer’s biomarker research. Jenny Bell earned the Innovations in Biological Science award and Lena White qualified and won a silver medal at the International Genius Olympiad. Interim administrators credited staff mentors and community support for those accomplishments.
Board members and principals then recognized PTO and PTA leaders across the district — including volunteer leaders at Matthew Patterson, Carmel High School, George Fisher Middle School and Kemp Primary — for organizing fundraisers, events, yearbooks and staff appreciation activities. Trustees thanked Parent‑Teacher organizations for supporting student programs and community engagement.
The board also acknowledged longtime employees and retirees. Joanne Sprague was called out for 49 years of service and Principal Brown was thanked for his contributions to Kent Primary School as he retires from the Carmel Central School District.
Trustees said such recognitions are the "North Star" of board meetings and encouraged continued community involvement.
