Woodbridge council updates: school construction steps, Greenway center events and library exhibits

Council members used the agenda portion to report on ongoing school facilities work, community programming and upcoming events.

Vice President Spiller summarized recent school-district actions: the district hired an engineering firm to conduct interior work related to building rehabilitation, approved removal and storage of a rooftop solar installation, and selected a construction contractor under project labor agreements for upcoming work. Spiller said the district intends to build a new School 4 and remodel School 5, and that after the new School 4 is completed the existing building will be taken down.

Councilwoman Meaghan reported outcome figures for a winter food drive: she said the drive collected 17,600 pounds of food and more than $54,000 in monetary donations, thanked businesses and school fundraisers, and announced a chili cook-off fundraiser on March 3 to benefit a third grader undergoing leukemia treatment. Councilwoman McCullough and others highlighted community events including a Chamber open house on Feb. 28 and the Saint Patrick’s Day parade on March 10.

The mayor and council also voiced broad thanks to George Brew and DPW crews for rapid snow removal after an unexpected heavy snowfall, which several speakers said left many streets cleared by morning. Several agenda items previewed for further action included resolutions related to Matty Court dedication, release of a surety bond for a property on Wood Avenue/Sweetwater Lane in Colonia, and a Cutter Stout Road bridge replacement resolution; those items were listed for future action rather than debated in detail at this meeting.
