Mount Rainier homeowners present rear-addition plans for two Thirtieth Street properties; county permits in hand

Two Mount Rainier homeowners presented building plans for rear additions on Thirtieth Street and said county permitting is complete.
Matt Butler described a rear addition at 4303 Thirtieth Street that will add a sunroom on the first floor and a primary suite above (a bedroom, closet and bathroom). Butler said his county permit was approved in June or July and that interior work has begun in advance of completing all city paperwork. "We're already underway, thanks to the approval of the permit in June or July," Butler said, adding that the family is expanding and wants to remain part of the neighborhood.
Desmond Decker told the council he acquired 4310 Thirtieth Street in January and plans to add about 800 square feet (roughly 400 square feet per floor) to the rear, gut and update the basement, and modernize plumbing, electrical and HVAC systems. Decker said he had submitted architectural drawings and that the county had approved the project.
Alma, the director of code enforcement, confirmed both projects hold county approvals and explained that, because of long waits, staff allowed applicants to begin interior work where the building fronts were unchanged. Councilmember Luke reminded applicants of local rules: no construction before 8 a.m. or after 8 p.m., protect trees with orange fencing, and avoid placing excavated soil where it could wash onto neighboring properties.
Both applicants were thanked for investing in Mount Rainier; there were no objections from council. Alma said applicants would be able to pick up permits and were welcome to remain online for the rest of the meeting if they wished.
