Council approves a slate of transfers and smaller appropriations across county departments

At the same meeting the Grant County Council approved a series of departmental transfers and additional appropriations intended to cover payroll adjustments, overtime and equipment needs across several county offices.
The county extension office received a small transfer to cover part-time wages. The county accepted a $15,000 additional appropriation for court personnel back pay and replacement salaries after the new officeholder reported staff changes that required retroactive payments. The council added $9,000 to the appeals/pauper-counsel account to pay outstanding attorney bills; one council member noted an abstention due to a conflict of interest.
Emergency Medical Services requested and received roughly $37,000 in additional appropriations to cover payroll and staffing adjustments. Central dispatch received a $4,000 transfer from contractual to overtime to cover extra hours for supervisory staffing. The highway department received sizable additions for stone/gravel, paving projects and equipment purchases; staff said a portion of those funds would be offset by state grants. The county area plan office approved a small transfer and a salary-ordinance amendment to make an acting staff member—s pay retroactive to Aug. 30.
What happens next: Departments will reconcile budgets and, where applicable, staff will place larger procurement requests on future agendas. The council scheduled a special budget meeting on Oct. 2 and the final budget adoption is planned for Oct. 16.
