Mount Rainier council appoints Valerie Woodall as vice mayor; committee reappointments approved

Selena Benitez, mayor of Mount Rainier, moved to appoint Valerie Woodall as vice mayor for the coming year, and the council approved the appointment without recorded dissent.
The motion followed a short discussion of vice-mayor rotation and the timing of the mayoral resolution that governs the rotation. The council agreed the appointment would run through May 2025, when local elections are scheduled.
The council also approved several annual appointments to the Recreation Committee, including reappointments of Stephanie Schlesinger (cochair), Emily Bird (cochair and grant reviewer), Bethany VanCampen Saravia and other members, and the appointment of Megan Haber and Jenny Hoffpower as voting members. The mayor said the city will place a proposed change to the appointment cadence on an upcoming work session so the council can consider moving to two-year terms.
In procedural business, the city clerk presented minutes from previous meetings and the council moved, seconded and approved the minutes for the June 4, 2024 legislative meeting.
