Agency approves surplus of Tony's Building artifacts; staff to coordinate with city plaza plans

The Columbia Gateway Urban Renewal Agency on Oct. 21 voted to declare artifacts recovered from the demolished Tony's Town and Country site surplus property and authorized staff to proceed with disposition under local procurement rules.
Staff said demolition and hazardous-abatement work on the Tony's site was completed in November 2023 and that two notable salvaged items—the Tony's Town and Country sign and a historic leather-and-metal pulley system—are crated and stored on city property. Agency staff recommended surplusing the items so they could be transferred, auctioned or otherwise disposed of under established intergovernmental and surplus procedures.
Several board members urged caution and suggested the ad hoc Federal Street Plaza committee consult the plaza architect to determine whether the sign could be incorporated into plaza design; City Manager Matthew Cleves and counsel said the agency could surplus the items while allowing an intergovernmental transfer to the city if the committee decides to reuse them.
The board moved and approved a motion to surplus the material and directed staff to coordinate with the city—s planned auction and the Federal Street Plaza process. Staff also reported three distinct responses to the site's request for expressions of interest and said an advisory committee will review proposals on Nov. 12.
Next steps: staff will coordinate disposition options with the city, consult the Federal Street Plaza ad hoc committee and report back at a future agency meeting.
