The Fenton Board of Aldermen voted Sept. 12 to buy three engineered‑stone entrance signs for city parks, endorsing the parks board’s recommended natural‑stone appearance but declining the pricier column bases.
Josh Hetley of Boulder Designs by Clarity told the board the product is an engineered limestone with a proved track record and a “lifetime anti‑crumble warranty,” saying units resist freeze‑thaw and can be sandblasted with permanent etched lettering. Staff presented a base bid of $33,785 for three signs sized about 60 inches by 48 inches with keyway anchors; an alternative parks‑recommended design totaled $71,165.
Several aldermen favored the less ornate, natural‑stone look and questioned the additional $30,000-plus cost of the higher‑end option. Board members also asked about vandalism resistance and repairs; Hetley said stains and scratches can be repaired and that the company can apply a chemical coating to make graffiti easier to remove.
A motion to accept the bid for three boulder‑style signs, using the natural‑stone sign (sign 2) without column bases and to look into an anti‑graffiti coating passed on a voice vote. The board directed staff to bring final design samples, lighting options and installation specifications back for sign‑off before the vendor begins production.
Next steps: staff will confirm whether the protective sealant is included or available as an add‑on, finalize lettering/font sizes during the design phase, and coordinate footing/landscaping so maintenance crews are not impeded by exposed concrete.
