Carmel Central School District board directs Trustee Jim Wise to complete antisemitism and Title VI training

The Carmel Central School District Board of Education on Nov. 7 adopted a resolution directing Trustee Jim Wise to attend and complete training on antisemitism and Title VI after receiving complaints about remarks he made at a July 9, 2024 board meeting.
An unnamed board member reading the resolution said the remarks were “collectively viewed, perceived, and interpreted as antisemitic and or discriminatory on the basis of national origin, shared ancestry, and ethnicity,” and that community members and staff had filed complaints alleging those statements created a hostile environment in violation of federal civil-rights law. The resolution notes training on antisemitism and Title VI was scheduled for and held on Oct. 30, 2024; all board and district administration members attended either in person or remotely except Trustee Wise.
Under the adopted measure the board “directs Trustee Jim Wise to attend and complete training on the specific topics of antisemitism and Title VI to be arranged by the superintendent of schools in consultation with the district’s attorney within 75 days of the date of this resolution.” The resolution text, as read at the meeting, sets that 75-day completion requirement as the board’s formal direction.
The motion to adopt the resolution was moved and seconded and passed by roll call vote. Trustees recorded as voting “Aye” were Trustee Curzio, Vice President Dole, Trustee Douglas, President Orson and Trustee Paraskiva. Trustee Jim Wise was not present for the Oct. 30 training and was not present at the Nov. 7 meeting when the vote was taken.
After the vote the board moved to recess into executive session for three topics: review of the employment history of a particular employee (the transcript notes the sequence “numbers 3 3 6 8 8”), collective negotiations with the CTA pursuant to Article 14 of the civil service law, and to receive legal guidance exempt from the open meetings law. The motion to enter executive session was approved by the board, and the meeting concluded with a statement that no additional public business would be conducted that evening; the board’s next regular meeting is scheduled for Nov. 19.
The resolution does not include a disciplinary sanction in the text read at the meeting; it requires completion of specified training arranged by district leadership. The agenda and the language of the resolution, as read aloud, form the basis for this report.
