City staff provided the Council with an update on the historic Lake Schoolhouse and the Parks & Historic Preservation Committee’s recommendation to demolish the building. The staff report included cost estimates that, according to the packet and staff commentary, place renovation work in excess of $300,000; staff also said efforts to find a private party or group willing to relocate the structure have been unsuccessful.
The committee recommended demolition while salvaging items of historical value for incorporation into future park improvements. The council discussed preserving architectural artifacts such as a school bell for display as part of the master‑plan process. Staff noted that, because the anticipated bid award for demolition falls below the council’s procurement threshold of $25,000, the council was not required to approve the bid award to proceed, but staff sought council concurrence to move forward.
Council members raised the possibility of preserving elements of the building for interpretive use in the park master plan. In the absence of a viable relocation option and given the demonstrated cost, the council indicated no objection to proceeding with demolition provided staff salvages historically significant items for reuse or display.
