Port commissioners honor Michael Hardiman with maritime order of merit

The San Francisco Port Commission on Aug. 24 conferred its maritime order of merit with the rank of commander on Commissioner Michael Hardiman in recognition of 16 years of service to the waterfront.

Commission Secretary read a resolution recounting Hardiman’s role in negotiating and guiding waterfront projects including the Giants ballpark, the Embarcadero Promenade, the ferry building renovation and multiple Pier improvements. The commission moved and approved the resolution by voice vote.

Speakers at the ceremony and during public comment described Hardiman as a persistent supporter of the port and of Fisherman’s Wharf businesses. “He has been instrumental in providing direction and guidance to the port staff for the successful negotiation and development of numerous projects,” the resolution text reads as read aloud by the commission secretary.

Tom Creedon of Skoma’s Restaurant recalled Hardiman’s community ties and longtime presence on the waterfront. Jack Baer, speaking for the San Francisco Giants organization, thanked Hardiman for his support during the ballpark’s development. Diane Oshima of port staff and other port employees and community members praised his mentorship and institutional knowledge.

The commission presented Hardiman with a plaque and medal and invited him to remain involved with waterfront initiatives; commissioners noted upcoming projects including shore-power work and construction milestones where they expect his continued participation.

The commission adjourned the tribute and continued with regular agenda items.
