Summary

The Pullman School District board discussed formation and appointment of a new diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging task force at its Nov. 20 meeting.
Dr. Maxwell reported application counts across categories (parents/guardians, community members, administrators, students, staff) with a total of 17 applications at the time of the update and said the closing date was Sept. 16. The board debated selection mechanics: whether to publicly discuss applications, whether appointment discussion qualifies for executive session, and how to balance candidate rankings with the need for demographic and viewpoint diversity on the task force.
Board members emphasized composition goals (representation across staff, administrators, students and community members), recommended reviewing and scoring applications ahead of the next meeting, and agreed to publicly appoint the task force at a meeting rather than discuss extensive application details in open session. The chair asked board members to submit ranked recommendations or top‑3 lists in categories to help assemble a balanced committee; staff will aggregate scores and prepare a recommended slate for board appointment.
