Jefferson County approves multiple law-enforcement contracts and $344,938 in claims

Jefferson County commissioners on June 10 approved a set of recurring contracts that pay for deputized law-enforcement services to neighboring municipalities and authorized payment of a large batch of county claims.

Commissioner Clark led the meeting as the board moved, seconded and approved employment agreements for law-enforcement personnel covering small municipalities. One motion recorded a total cost of $7,332.74 for the city of Manan to be paid in quarterly installments; similar motions carried for Roberts ($7,764.08) and Dyerie (quarterly installments of $2,156.69). The board treated the agreements as routine renewals and commissioners noted the contract amounts had not changed from prior years.

The board also approved claims covering the period May 25 through June 7, 2024, totaling $344,938.09. A motion to approve the claims was moved and seconded and passed by roll call; the transcript records multiple ‘Aye’ responses from commissioners.

Separately, the county discussed and approved a hold‑harmless/indemnification letter from Vista Valley Ag permitting that company to use county landfill equipment and space to break up materials from an old loft slated for demolition. County staff said the indemnification had been reviewed by the prosecutor’s office and would be kept on file.

Commissioners questioned several line items in claims and asked staff to document procurement steps more clearly: they asked that fuel and small equipment purchases include documented quotes or a simple intake form so the county retains an auditable record of vendor pricing and capacity. A line item for interior lighting replacement by White Sands Communications and Electric drew particular attention and prompted a request for clearer breakdowns of labor and parts on future claims.

The board recessed midmorning to follow up with the landfill operator and later returned for additional agenda items.
