Planning commission previews Halsey street design, roundabout funding challenges and names new city manager

At the end of the Nov. 12 meeting staff previewed upcoming agenda items and municipal updates for the Fairview Planning Commission. Staff said the commission will discuss the Halsey cross-section and street design plan on Dec. 10; the plan was developed in coordination with Wood Village, Troutdale and Multnomah County and will come back to the commission for review before a public hearing and a recommendation to the City Council.
Funding for major corridor projects: staff noted the Halsey improvements and a proposed roundabout are in the regional transportation plan but that reconstructing long sections of Halsey would be expensive and will depend on regionally allocated and federal funds; staff cited prior examples where large reconstruction efforts required multimillion-dollar grants and phased approaches.
Personnel and process updates: staff announced that Nathan George has been named the new city manager with a start date of Monday, Dec. 30. Commissioners also asked about building-permit issuance; staff explained Fairview issues permits through its public works department and that complex plan review is handled by the city of Gresham’s plan examiners before Fairview issues stamped permits to applicants.
Next steps: the commission has no Nov. 26 meeting; the next regular meeting is Dec. 10, when commissioners will review the Halsey cross-section and related street-design materials ahead of public hearings and recommendations to council.
