St. Paul Public Library to help residents apply for Section 8 waiting list; mobile library named MOBY

During the meeting the library reported on upcoming events and community supports, including staff assistance when the Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) waiting list opens.

Public services manager Zania Hernandez said library staff will be trained so they can help community members use computers, set up email accounts and navigate the online application when the waiting list opens next week. A staff trainer filling in for the economic opportunity coordinator explained a representative from the housing voucher program will be available at the Rondo Community Library and the George Latimer Central Library from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on opening day to help with navigation.

Staff said the waiting list size has been lowered from 2,000 to 1,200, and that the selection is conducted by lottery so applying earlier in the open period does not improve odds. "It also does not matter when community members apply during that open period," a staff member said. "It is a lottery system."

The director also highlighted library programming for Native American Heritage Month, the Little Learners series for preschool-age children, and noted the American Library Association will tour the mobile library and central library during its upcoming conference in the Twin Cities. Staff announced the mobile library's name as "MOBY." Council members thanked staff for the services and said the partnership to support low-income households was particularly valuable.
