Presenters noted the district has 114 teachers who are in their first or second year and described ongoing mentoring and on-campus supports. The contract amounts stated in the meeting were $2,800 for certification training for 14 individuals and $57,000 for district-wide mentoring support.
Trustees discussed cost-effectiveness and in-house options for mentoring, with staff noting budget constraints that limit hiring additional full-time district employees for the work. The board moved, seconded and approved the contract by voice vote.
District staff said the training will cover reading and math content, supports for special populations and relationship-building strategies. The presenters said monthly mentor visits and campus-based principal-in-residence activities will support new teachers throughout the year.
