Kearney, Mo. — At its July 15 meeting the Kearney Board of Aldermen received a routine June financial report, heard mayoral communications celebrating local trails and later voted to move into executive session to discuss personnel matters.
Finance director Stephanie Harris told the board that June marks the third month of the fiscal year and that the city is roughly 25% of the way through the budget year; most revenues and expenses "look right where we expect them to be," though timing differences related to transfers were noted. Harris invited questions; none were raised during the public discussion.
The mayor congratulated parks staff after noting the Jesse James Trail was recognized as among the Northland's top three and thanked Parks and Recreation staff for maintenance work. The mayor also reiterated frustration with Republic Services and resident complaints and said staff will keep working to resolve service problems.
City administrator Sheila Ernsen announced the next regular board meeting for Aug. 5 at 6:30 p.m. and asked citizens to support the city's application for a Planning Sustainable Places grant by posting supportive comments via a pinned Facebook post.
Aldermen raised several local operational items, including a question from Alderman Barker about responsibility for a dead tree at Nineteenth Street and updates on roundabout maintenance and native seed mixes. Alderman Holt urged civility in the election season, citing a violent incident in Pennsylvania as a reminder to treat opponents respectfully.
Before adjourning the open session, the mayor read an executive session notice citing RSMO 610.021 subsections 3 and 13 concerning personnel matters and individually identifiable personnel records. The board moved, seconded, and voted unanimously to enter executive session at 6:55 p.m.
Next steps: Staff will carry out standard financial monitoring, proceed with outreach for the sustainable places grant, address tree/maintenance follow‑ups, and hold the planned executive session on personnel.
