Council agrees to place change to Recreation Committee terms on next agenda

Mount Rainier council members on Sept. 17 agreed to move forward with a proposed change to the Recreation Committee resolution that would extend member terms from one year to two years.
Council member Valerie Woodall, who presented the proposed change, said the committee now has a full membership and is running four to five larger events per year. She argued that two-year terms would preserve institutional knowledge and continuity through event planning and the fiscal-year schedule. “We have 4 to 5 impactful events a year…and if we have two-year terms rather than one-year terms, they can continue to work as they did somewhat over the summer,” Woodall said.
Council members indicated agreement and asked staff to include the revised resolution for its first official reading at the next legislative meeting. The mayor noted that the board recently sworn in would have their terms extended to match the new language if the resolution is adopted.
The work session did not include a formal vote on the change; the next step is placement on the legislative meeting agenda for formal first reading and any subsequent action.
The meeting concluded shortly after the discussion, with a motion to adjourn moved and seconded and no objections recorded in the transcript.
