United ISD expands vape‑detector pilot and adds vaping prevention to district improvement plan

Adriana Ramirez, executive director for federal programs, said the plans are "working documents" and may be adjusted as principals monitor strategies. Board members said the vaping task force, started last year, has expanded and detectors are being piloted at multiple campuses.
A trustee and staff member discussed cost and scope: "They're about $1,000 per detector," a trustee said while describing plans to install detectors in bathrooms and locker rooms; staff reported that all four high schools already have detectors and two middle schools do, and that two more campuses were being added to the pilot this year.
Trustees asked how the initiative would be funded. Staff said the expense is significant and that the district has integrated the vaping initiative into the district improvement plan (DIP) and the VIP (vaping initiative plan). The DIP will be posted online if approved and remains subject to revision.
The workshop discussion also connected vaping prevention to other safety concerns raised in public comment. No formal vote occurred at the workshop; staff will bring the DIP to the board for approval at the regular meeting packet.
