Local Fire Department Highlights Free High-School Firefighter Program That Leads to National Certifications

Chief Joyner of the Ponchatoula Fire Department and training officers presented a high-school firefighter program that enrolls seniors to train at the department and earn nationally recognized certifications at no cost to students.
Chief Joshua White said students who complete the yearlong program graduate high school with credit and receive IFSAC and Pro Board certifications (Fire 1 and Fire 2, HAZMAT awareness and operations). "They're nationally recognized certifications," White said, adding the credentials do not expire and enable graduates to pursue firefighting careers across the United States.
Chief Joyner noted the program's pilot included four students in its first year and has expanded; Trey Slade, a graduate, was hired by the City of Ponchatoula. The program, offered across Livingston Parish District 4 and neighboring areas, relies on department staff and volunteers; administrators said transportation and coordination with school counselors are being addressed to expand access.
No formal council action was required; council members congratulated program staff and asked staff to publicize enrollment deadlines.
Next steps: interested students are asked to contact their school counselors; administrators said Aug. 29 is the deadline to sign up for the upcoming class.
