District announces graduations, teacher honors and summer meal program; offices to observe July 3

Superintendent/board presenter celebrated high-school graduations, noted two Brevard High teachers invited by Lemelson-MIT for a grant competition, outlined a free summer meals program at two pickup sites through Aug. 14, and confirmed summer schedule changes and next meeting date.
At the June 16 meeting Dr. Fletcher delivered the district’s good-news report, congratulating graduates from the three high schools and highlighting teacher honors. Dr. Fletcher said Brevard High teachers Matthew Tuckey and Rebecca Walkup received a Lemelson-MIT Excite award invitation and may be eligible for event-team grant funding that could send students to MIT’s EurekaFest.
Dr. Fletcher outlined the district’s summer meals program: two pickup sites (Pisgah Forest Elementary and Champion Park Pool in Rosman) will provide a hot lunch and a breakfast for the next day from noon until 12 Monday through Thursday through Aug. 14; on Thursdays a weekend breakfast and lunch also will be provided. Meals are free to all children in Transylvania County under age 18 and do not require attendance in Transylvania County Schools; families are asked to limit themselves to one or two sites per day. The Department of School Nutrition Services is also providing meals to 14 other summer program sites in the county between June 9 and Aug. 22.
Dr. Fletcher said the district begins a four-day workweek for administration and central services this week; offices will be closed July 3 for Independence Day. Teacher workdays are scheduled Aug. 18–22, and the board’s next regular meeting is July 21.
