Council approves $700,000 Crime Gun Intelligence Center grant, creates two student analyst roles

Vanderburgh County Council approved a grant-backed staffing request on Aug. 14 to help build a local Crime Gun Intelligence Center (CGIC). Elora Bailey, appearing for the prosecutor—s office, told council the Bureau of Justice Assistance approved the proposal and the grant is roughly $700,000 over three years. The prosecutor asked to create two part‑time student analyst positions, funded entirely by the grant, to support the CGIC and the high‑tech crimes unit.
Bailey said the student analyst roles will be supervised by the office—s CJIC analyst, who has experience supervising interns. "They are gonna be student analysts...their position is fully funded by the grant," Bailey said. Council members asked about the grant amount and term; Bailey confirmed the total is about $700,000 spread across three years and that the budget encapsulates personnel and program expenses.
By voice vote the council approved creating the two positions and accepting the grant. The motion includes the condition that the positions be funded solely from the grant and supervised by the CJIC analyst; no appropriation from county general funds was requested for those positions.
