She described teachers and parents seeking supplemental funding—citing GoFundMe requests, churches helping schools, and volunteers filling gaps—and argued that achieving academic growth for struggling students requires trained teachers and increased direct instructional time, not just volunteers or worksheets. Walvar said, “Resources for academic growth are people. Train teachers who can oversee and deliver the appropriate instruction at the appropriate level.”
She urged the board to personally and strongly advocate for necessary resources at county, state and federal levels and to track progress through frequent monitoring of student progress.
